We've had an extremely exciting season of orienteering so far. With the Sprint World Orienteering Championships 2024 now over, you may have seen lots of posts across our website and social media highlighting the fantastic efforts of the Great Britain team.

So what is all the hype about orienteering and how can you get involved this summer?

About orienteering

Orienteering is a fun and exciting sport that exercises both your mind and body. All you need to take part is some comfortable clothing and footwear, and an orienteering map, which you can either get from the Go Orienteering website or download via the MapRun app, and you are all set!

Your aim when looking at a map is to reach the various 'control points' either in your own time and at your own pace, or challenge yourself and your peers to complete the whole course as quickly as you can!

A common misconception of orienteering is that it only takes place in forests, woodland or green spaces...not the case! There are plenty of courses and events that also take place in urban settings, so whether you are based in the city, or rural countryside there are plenty of opportunities for you regardless.

Who can take part in orienteering?

Our sport is truly for everyone. Whether you want to introduce the family, take part on your own to try something more adventurous and exciting, or elevate your fitness levels, there is something for everyone no matter what your age or ability.
