Welsh Championships 2025

4 March 2025
The Welsh Championships 2025 weekend was held on 1-2 March at Moel Smytho (Welsh League) and Llechweddgain (Welsh Champs) in South West Eryri National Park. In this blog, Ian Jones and Lizzie Irvine (Eryri Orienteers) share more about this year's competition.

Both open mountain areas offering a great physical and navigational challenge with Llechweddgain in particular providing masses of fine contour detail. If you could spare a moment from map reading, the views were outstanding. Early morning helpers were greeted by the sound of black grouse and an eagle perched on one of the many boulders.

There were many excellent performances over the two days, with 115 competitors on day one and 155 competitors on Day 2.

Ultimately Anna Drinkwater, ERYRI, was open ladies’ champion and William Reynolds, SBOC, was open men’s champion. Freddie Lake, SBOC, was awarded Welsh Orienteer of the Year for consistently high placements throughout 2024 including winning his course at the West Midlands championships and 2nd at the Yvette Baker Trophy final. Jenny Williamson was awarded Welsh Volunteer of the Year for her pivotal role and dedication toward the resurgence of the Eryri Orienteering Club. Nearly all the members of our small club played a part in making these events happen, plus some friends from SBOC, SWOC, WRE, DEE, MDOC and LEI. Thanks to you all.

Results for the two days can be found on the Eryri Orienteering Club website.
