Upcoming TrailO – online and for real!

25 October 2021

Through the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when ‘real’ orienteering was at a standstill, many British orienteers got their regular ‘fix’ via virtual TrailO, in particular, the very popular TORUS virtual TempO events.

A new series of TORUS (TempO Online Races Ultimate Series) is about to get underway – see here

Participation is free, and there are plenty of training events to enjoy online.

Good news!  Two events in PreO, the ‘classic’ form of Trail Orienteering, are set to take place shortly.

Firstly, Eborienteers have a Sprint PreO at Breezy Knees Gardens, Warthill near York on the 7 November, details can be found here

Then British Army Orienteering Club (BAOC) is organising two events near Aldershot on 13 and 14 November, details are available on the BAOC website here, which fit neatly around two FootO events, the Southern Night Championships and Sunday’s Southern Navigators Trophy event.

All three events count for BriTOL, the British Orienteering TrailO League.

The Eborienteers event is limited to 60 entrants for logistical reasons and is filling up fast, so entries should be made as soon as possible.  For masses of information about TrailO and BriTOL, visit the dedicated TrailO Minisite that is part of the British Orienteering website and can be found here.

Never tried TrailO and want to find out more and have a go?

TrailO has two disciplines.

  • PreO is the 'standard' form of TrailO.
PreO completely eliminates the element of speed over the ground but makes the map interpretation element much harder. Depending on the level of difficulty, up to five control markers are hung at each site and only one will correspond exactly with the control description and control circle position.
  • TempO is the 'Sprint' form of TrailO.
TempO is the sprint version of TrailO, consisting of timed controls throughout. Each person is called individually to a control station and is seated – or if in a wheelchair, placed at the same spot – with a view out over terrain with usually 6 kites visible on different mapped features.
