Junior World Orienteering Championships
Aguiar da Beira, Portugal
11-16 July 2022
After two years of no Junior International Competition, a team of twelve GB athletes lined up in Portugal.
GB Peter Molloy in his last year as a Junior was the highest placed GB athlete in 12th place, with GB Flurry Grierson one place behind, it was Imogen GB Howard who had the strongest run in the women's and finished in 22nd place.
Unfortunately, this will be the last of the Individual races as the programme has had to be modified due to the extreme risk of forest fires with the Middle and Long-distance races being postponed.
However, since then the local organisers have worked closely together with the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) to create an alternative race programme with a Sprint Relay being held on Wednesday 13 July as an official medal race, first-ever Sprint Relay at a Junior World Orienteering Championships.
Furthermore, the IOF council has allowed each nation to participate with two teams in the Sprint Relay and both will take place at Arena Carapito where the Individual Sprints were held yesterday (Monday 11 July).
The existing ban on forest activities is scheduled to expire on Friday (15 July), and if it is not extended one of the forest races will be held on Saturday 16 July.
