Walsh Trophy Award Winner 2023: Alasdair Pedley, Auld Reekie Orienteering Society

27 March 2024

In our final spotlight in our series celebrating the winners of the Mapping Awards 2023, we are pleased to present the Walsh Trophy Winner 2023 as Alasdair Pedley, Auld Reekie Orienteering Society.

The Walsh Trophy is awarded annually to the best urban or sprint map drawn to ISSOM specification.

Alasdair Pedley, Auld Reekie Orienteering Society

Map area: Bughtlin

Alasdair Pedley mapped this area   located in the west of Edinburgh   for the Big Weekend 2024. The area is very tricky to map as it is very intricate, and many passages and gaps are too small to map at their correct size.

Alasdair achieved a brilliant mix of legibility and accuracy. The elite international competitors some of the pickiest athletes praised the quality and clarity of the map and had no trouble deciphering it at high speed.

Well done Alasdair for your work and for winning the Walsh Trophy 2023.

Nominees for the Walsh Trophy 2023

Graham Gristwood, Forth Valley Orienteers – Map area: Alloa

“This map was used for Sprint Scotland 2023, with a full World Ranking Event Knock-Out Sprint using various sections of the map. The event used smaller map extracts with different layouts, but this is the full map of the whole area.”
