JWOC 2024: Sprint Relay and Sprint Results

2 July 2024

Yesterday the GB Team completed the Sprint Relay Race at the Junior World Orienteering Championships, and today the Sprint Race took place! Let's take a look at the results.

Sprint Relay

Yesterday saw the start Junior World Orienteering Championships, held in Pilsen, Czechia, with more than 300 athletes from over 38 nations expected to take part across the five races during JWOC week.

The first discipline was the Mixed Sprint Relay, which was held in the western end of Pilsen on a mix of hard and soft surfaces.

GB 1- which was a team of Imogen Pieters, James Hammond, Euan Tryner and Isobel Howard had a great race and finished well to cross the line in 8th place. However, due to a technical issue meaning that control 3 was not registered for one of the athletes despite the athlete punching the control, the team was disqualified.

This team of Daisy McNamara, Ben Squire, Adam Methven and Freya Tryner finished in 18th position. In JWOC as only one team per nation is recorded on the results list, the team of Jocie Hilton, Tommy Rollins, Ben Gostick and Ruth Gooch did not appear on the results list, but also enjoyed a great race which would see them gain plenty of experience for the week ahead.

Sprint

The team were back in force today at the Sprint race!

The Individual Sprint race took place closer to the city in the centre of Stříbro. With twelve athletes from Great Britain on the start line with some great individual runs in the relay the previous day, it was hoped that some good results could be carried forward into the Individual races.

It was Great Britain’s Imogen Pieters, who had a fantastic race to finish 10th alongside Finland’s Virna Pellikka.

Tomorrow will see the the long distance race which looks to be a rough one in continental terrain with lots of hills. The athletes will be looking forward to covering 9.6/11.5 kms with 480/560 meters to climb for women and men respectively and we wish them all the best of luck!
