My JK memories

My first memories are of the 1967 event at Blackdown in Surrey. As a 15 year old schoolboy at Godalming Grammar School where Martin Hyman had introduced me to Orienteering the previous autumn, I sat at a control site in a depression for hours timing runners through. No electronics in those days, just a watch a pencil and paper!

The next year I was Course Vetter to Planner, Chris Brasher. Probably for no better reason than I was the closest active orienteer to the area, Waggoners Wells. Oh, and I was a member of Borders Harriers whose clubhouse was used as HQ and Finish. What a character Chris was! He wouldn’t accept anything as impossible - even a mid course crossing of the busy A3. Probably the characteristic which helped him get the London Marathon going. He was great to work with, I learnt a lot.
