The IOF has been informed by the organisers of the 2020 Sprint World Championship (WOC) scheduled to take place in Denmark that they are unable to organise at all in 2020 (the competition had already been moved from July to October).
There are several reasons for this but the main reason is that one of their main financiers, the regional tourist board, has informed them that they need to retract their support for the event taking place in 2020 as there is no guarantee that it will be possible to conduct spectator events in connection with WOC, due to COVID-19 virus restrictions in Denmark.
Discussions are ongoing to move Denmark instead as host of Sprint WOC in 2022, with a corresponding move of Sprint WOC in Scotland to be in 2024 rather than 2022.
The current challenging situation has made change to the international calendar inevitable, and British Orienteering would like to acknowledge the huge effort and commitment that these major events require from the organising teams and from athletes targeting the championships, and our appreciation for the significant amount of work already put in by all those affected.
