British Orienteering Awards Announcement - Volunteer of the Year 2020

22 April 2021

British Orienteering today is proud to announce the Volunteer of the Year.

This award is presented to a volunteer who has demonstrated a commitment to supporting delivery of orienteering activity with passion, energy, and enthusiasm.

This year’s winner is:  Caroline Mackenzie (Cleveland Orienteering Klub)

Commenting on her award Caroline says:
“I'm delighted and honoured to have been chosen as British Orienteering's Volunteer of the Year.  I feel that this is as much a reflection on the efforts and commitment of Cleveland Orienteering Klub as on myself as an individual.

One of the main reasons why --- after some friendly arm-twisting by the outgoing job-holder --- I agreed to take on the role of Chair of the CLOK Committee was that I knew I could count on a great deal of support from experienced, enthusiastic, and committed club members.  I'm really proud of what the club has achieved over the last year or so.  As well as doing a good job of getting back to putting on high-quality orienteering events as soon as the coronavirus restrictions allowed, the club has also found the time and energy to formulate and start implementing a strategy to secure its longer-term future.  In particular, we've appointed a Schools Development Officer to revive and expand our school development programme and obtained an Orienteering Foundation grant to help to fund a Club Development Officer to attract new people into orienteering in the Cleveland area to help to correct our ageing membership profile.  There's still a lot to do, but I'm confident we're heading in the right direction.”

Club Secretary John Green, comments:

“Caroline Mackenzie, the current CLOK Chair, has through her leadership and personal volunteering steered the club through one of the most difficult years imaginable. She has laid the basis for many club members to have the opportunity of running in conventional (SI based) events and helped set up and encourage others to develop Virtual Orienteering Courses and upgrade existing Permanent Orienteering Courses. Looking to the future Caroline led a successful grant application with the Orienteering Foundation to support the club contracting the services of a Club Development Officer.”

Many congratulations Caroline.
