Today British Orienteering is proud to shine the spotlight on...
British Orienteering celebrated The Walsh Trophy Winner and Runners Up.
This award is presented for the best urban or sprint map.
Congratulations to Paul Basher (Harlequins Orienteering Club) for winning this award for his mapping of Redditch Church Hill.
The competitors found this map was clear, easy to read, and accurate in all the parts visited and commented that it was one of the best urban maps they have ever competed on. The size of the area is such that it will have required a significant commitment of time and effort by the mapper.
Many congratulations Paul!

Richard Payne (East Pennine Orienteering Club). This is a brand-new map of Pontefract for orienteering that was intended to be used in July 2020 however covid restrictions did not allow this. We were eventually able to host an event in July 2021 where the map and courses, also planned by Richard, were well received by all competitors. People particularly enjoyed the opportunity to visit Pontefract Castle with most competitors having been previously unaware that Pontefract has a castle.

Dominic Dakin (South Yorkshire Orienteers), who mapped Lodge Moor, Sheffield, which won the best amateur map - see the piece on the Walsh award for further details.
-----
Graham Gristwood (Forth Valley Orienteers), was nominated for his work on a new map of Callander, north of the river. Drawn from Lidar and OS base data this map has been successfully used for several events since.
