The first of the Orienteering World Cup competitions took place in Borås, Sweden with the Sprint taking place at Sjöbo which is just a couple of kilometres north of centre of Borås in housing estates, in between apartment blocks with lots of controls and many different route choices.
Great Britain had twelve athletes competing in the Individual Sprint, looking for good performances ahead of the Sprint World Championships in a month’s time. First home in the Women’s was GB Charlotte Ward who secured her first top 10 finish in a major senior International.
After her race, Charlotte said: “I’m really happy with my result today. I focused on the orienteering and let the running follow. It was a fun race and exciting to be back at the World Cup."
In the men’s race Kris Jones finished 8th after what he described as a frustrating race, but many positives also.
Kris said: “I lost too much time for a top result but also had some good parts of the race which were very good."
Nathan Lawson put in a good performance to secure his first World Cup points.
Nathan said: "On the whole, I don’t really have many complaints about my run. I felt controlled throughout the race and committed to the route once I decided which let me gain a bit of confidence. I felt I was maybe over cautious though and didn’t push physically as much as I could have, especially early on and I did miss a couple of gaps and routes.
It was really well planned though, and I am looking forward to the rest of the week’s races to test myself in new disciplines for me.”
Last year’s overall World Cup winners Kasper Fosser (NOR) and Tove Alexandersson (SWE) had a great start to their overall title defence both winning the Individual Sprint.
