British Orienteering

Helen Errington

6 March 2023

It is with the deepest sadness and regret that we announce the passing of much-respected friend and colleague Helen Errington earlier this week. Helen was hugely committed to orienteering and made a massive difference to our community over many years.

Helen’s husband Simon wrote the following on Thursday 2nd March:

“Many of you will know that Helen was diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer in the middle of January. Things progressed unbelievably fast and it is with great sadness that we have to tell you she died peacefully at home yesterday evening.

Orienteering was an enormous part of her life as a competitor, as an organiser and for a long time as a job. As a family we travelled around the UK and the world to compete, seeing wonderful places and having many great adventures. She was heavily involved in putting on events at all levels, from the smallest training courses for school children and club juniors, through British Championships and JKs, all the way up to World Cup races. We are sure everyone receiving this, and many thousands more beyond, will have run at an event made possible by Helen.

One of the few ambitions she failed to reach was to be British Champion; she always had her eye on W90, which she joked would require her to be the last woman standing. Sadly that was not to be, but we will remember her long list of remarkable achievements with immense pride.”

Our thoughts and love go to Simon, James and Peter.
