British Orienteering would like to congratulate David Olivant (Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club) for being awarded the 2022 Bonington Trophy Award.
The Bonington Trophy Award is presented for services to mapping.
David has been the original mapper of at least 20 of the Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club’s maps, including those for major events, since the 1980s. Happy to spend hours in the forest, park, or urban areas he has been described by his peers as “one of the unsung heroes of orienteering without whom the sport would not exist.”
Ready to embrace new technologies, he has thrived from mentoring and training new mappers and guided them on how to use tools such as MapRun, Condes, Lidar and GPS. In recent years he has been responsible for collating the work of other volunteer surveyors to update our Sherwood Forest and Clumber Park maps for area championships whilst also mentoring a new mapper doing a park map for a POC and supporting the National Trust, the RSPB & local authorities to update some POCs in the county.
Huge congratulations to David for winning this award! You can learn more about Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club via their website.
We would also like to warmly congratulate our nominees for this year's award. They are:
