We've reached the half way point in the 2024 season of UK Orienteering League races, with 13 of the 26 events having now taken place. The British Sprint Championships this weekend is the 14th race, closely followed by a pair of Sprint Weekend races in Yorkshire, and then two days of the popular Croeso multi-day competition in Wales. The season will then take a break over the summer until the last three pairs of UKOL events of the year between September and November.
This year the competition is based on the best 8 scores from the 26 available races, and many people have now completed enough races to have a "full set". With 50 points available for an age class winner at each race, the maximum score for the season is therefore 400 points. Congratulations to Kirsten Strain (W35, AROS) and Christine Kiddier (W70, BL) who have each already achieved that total and therefore already won the 2024 season! There are plenty of others who have already scored over 390 points, and are therefore looking likely to be the winners of their age classes.
In the club competition it is SYO that is again leading with 5,057 points currently, ahead of FVO in 2nd on 4,518 points and SROC narrowly in 3rd on 4,505. The position of clubs could change quite a lot in the last part of the season, as four of the last six UKOL races are in the South Central and South West regions, giving the clubs in those regions a good chance to make up some places towards the end. For example BOK, which finished 5th club in 2023, is currently down in 15th so far in 2024, but is surely going to move up a lot from there.
Thanks very much to all the clubs that have hosted UKOL races so far, and also to those that will host those in the second half of the season. Your support of the UKOL is much appreciated.
Finally, the prize-giving for competitors who placed in the top 3 of each age class will be held at the British Sprint Championships event this weekend. The results from 2023 are still available on the UKOL website - see the links below. Prize winners who aren't able to be at that prize-giving can collect their prize from the UKOL Coordinator at future races.
