Update on Progress

  • Withdraw the current Level 2 from 1st for Sport and develop our own Level 2 award.

The Orienteering Coach Qualification was launched in July, this replaces the Level 2 certificate in orienteering and has the same learning outcomes and now embraces blended learning and flexible delivery.

We are on course to formally withdraw from 1st for Sport by 31st March 2025, many thanks to the Tutors ,Coaches and Assessors that are and have enabled us to stay on track.

  • Reintroduce a level 1 qualification

The British Orienteering Instructor qualification is  being designed for instructors running introductory Orienteering sessions within the safety management systems of the deploying organisation, clubs, outdoor centres, schools and other organisations such as uniformed groups.

The learning outcomes for each deployer will be the same, however the route to completing the Qualification will differ.

Qualified Instructors will be able to independently deliver high quality introductory orienteering sessions through the use of key skills guidance card that teach orienteering skills whilst working towards steps 1 to 3 of the step system in areas A & B

The Intructor Qualification is currently being piloted by two major outdoor providers, Kingswood and PGL and early feedback is very positive. Our ambition is to launch the Instructor Qualification aimed at outdoor centres by the close of 2024, we are on track to achieve this.

We are very keen to understand the level of support for this qualification within our club network  and will be contacting Clubs later in the month.

Reintroduce a Level 3 coaching qualification.

Work is due to begin in the New Year or sooner, we are currently looking to survey the performance coaching community and those interested in performance to capture their thoughts ensuring that we develop a Qualification that supports our performance aspirations.

Develop a robust system of CPD for our Coaching workforce

Develop a fair, transparent and robust Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.

Work will begin in these two areas, once all 3 qualifications are up and running.
