The Individual Day of the British Orienteering Championships 2014 will be held in Thrunton Woods and Callaly.  This day is part of the UK Orienteering League.

The event programme is now available for download as Word or PDF.

Location

Thrunton Woods and Callaly are located 35 miles / 45 minutes north of Newcastle, just off the A697.

Terrain

Callaly was previously used for the British Orienteering Championship Relays in 1991, and contains a mixture of natural woodland and moorland, with a rich tapestry of contour and rock detail, including many some magnificent rock pillars.

Thrunton Woods have not been used recently, but have a rich orienteering history including the Northern Championships in 1975.  The woods consist of mixed forestry commission plantation, and a plateau of mature runnable pine forest with rock and contour detail.

RouteGadget from a 2010 event at Callaly can be found here (BOC will only use the northern half of this).  An ancient map of Thrunton can be found here.

Championship Courses

All individual long distance championship courses will be offered and with course combinations as per Competition Rule A: British Long Orienteering Championships (with one exception that W16L will be on a separate course (17B), due to the way different classes / courses / ages are spilt between different starts).

Championship course should be pre-entered before Sunday 11th May 2014.  There will be NO entry on the day.  Entry fees are as follows.

Enter by Sunday 16th March 2014 Enter by Sunday 11th May 2014

Juniors (M/W20-) £13.00 £15.00

We are also accepting student entries on M/W21+ courses at the junior rate.  Unfortunately Fabian4 only got updated to handle this shortly before the closing date.  If you previously entered at the full senior rate, then email entries@boc2014.org.uk with names of the full time students are who have entered M/W21+, and we will arrange a refund.

Non-Championship Courses

In addition to the championship courses (by age class) the following non-championship courses will be offered: White, Yellow, Orange, Light Green, Green, Blue. These are primarily aimed at people new to orienteering or those not yet confident enough to tackle a full championship course. You can choose any course you like irrespective of age and gender.

These courses will be the only ones available for entry on the day and no start times will be allocated - just turn up and go (pre-entries were available but are now closed).  Entry fees are as follows:

  Pre-entry Entry on the day
Seniors (M/W21+) £7.00 £7.00
Juniors (M/W20-_ £3.00 £3.00

Pre-entries for the Individual are now closed.  The entry list can be viewed at Fabian4.

Layout

Parking will be adjacent to assembly / finish (there may be special arrangements for larger vehicles e.g. campervans - further details will be provided nearer the time).

Starts

To give more varied use of the area, there will be multiple starts.

  • Red Start - 900m from Event Arena
  • White Start - 2100m from Event Arena
  • Blue Start - 3900m from Event Arena

See the event programme for details of which courses are at which starts.  All starts share a common route for 500m to where they blue start diverges.  The red and white starts are then common until 50m before the red start.

Start times will be from 10:30am to 1:30pm.  A start block preference can be specified when entering (and can subsequently be updated up to the closing date, via Fabian4 - see the entries page for more details).  Seeding will be done according to British Orienteering guidelines for the event.

Dogs

Dogs are NOT permitted anywhere in car parks, assembly or in the competition area.  We are very sorry about this, but it is a restriction of the parking and assembly landowners.
