We will be sharing The Downs Cafe area with junior footballers who play on a Saturday morning on the adjacent junior football pitches and their families and other regular cafe users. It is hoped that many youngsters will wish to try out our sport, and and a free Newcomers course has been specially created for them and their families to give a taste of orienteering and hopefully a String Course too. The Start and Finish are both across Stoke Road and so parents and guardians are asked to ensure they safely conduct their children across this busy road which will not be marshalled.
Dog rules:Dogs need to be on a lead near the café and kept under control in all areas.

Courses

Course description:Courses: For this event there will be a free and non-competitive beginners' course, in addition to the usual competitive courses from White up to Blue standard. Map: Scale 1: 7,500 with 5m contours kindly updated in 2024 by Mike Forrest from earlier versions The Downs offers a mix of open parkland and small wooded areas, providing varied challenges for orienteering. Most courses run through flat, open grassland with scattered trees and bushes. Some courses may cross a 20 mph road, the courses have been planned to cross this road at an obtuse angle, please therefore take plenty of time to ensure you cross this road only when it is safe to do so. Unaccompanied Juniors will be conducted across by BOK marshals. Longer courses may enter a wooded valley with steeper slopes and rougher terrain. Shoes with good grip are essential here, especially after rain. For shorter courses, trainers are suitable unless it's wet. This diverse terrain makes The Downs ideal for all skill levels.
