Training

There are a number of British Orienteering recommended training courses. Please note, all courses remain valid on your records for a period of three years. After which, they will need to be refreshed. Click below to find out more about the course aims and how to get yourself enrolled. 

British Orienteering Introducing Safeguarding eLearning Course

Course length: 1 hour

British Orienteering believes that it is essential to have at least a basic understanding of what behaviour is appropriate, how to identify a safeguarding concern and be confident about how to respond, as well as being clear about how to access support.

This course has been designed to be a great introduction for those delivering orienteering to others and wishing to learn about safeguarding, especially those who have contact with children or adults at risk.

To provide learners with a basic awareness of safeguarding children and adults at risk, including an awareness of the categories of abuse, the ability to identify the signs of abuse and to know what to do if you have concerns about a child or an adult at risk. After completing this course you should be able to:

  • Understand the various types of abuse and neglect
  • Identify signs of abuse and know what to look for
  • Know what to do if you suspect a child is being abused
  • Understand the importance of reporting your concerns

This eLearning course is £10.00, the course will take approximately 45 minutes to complete, and you will also receive the following:

  • British Orienteering is also pleased to confirm that this eLearning course will be accepted as part of a coaches safeguarding requirements to remain licensed (excluding Scotland as coaches there are expect to take a Sports Scotland "Child Wellbeing & Protection in Sport" course). The recently updated requirements for coaches’ licenses to remain valid, states that for coaches who only work with adults, they will need to complete an appropriate on-line safeguarding module by 1st June 2021. This Introduction to Safeguarding course will be accepted as that on-line module. Other providers courses will still be accepted on submission of attendance certificates. However, the British Orienteering course is the only one to provide specific Orienteering case studies and related content. Please note, coaches who work with children and young people will still need to take an initial tutor led course either in person or via an online classroom.

UK Coaching - Safeguarding & Protecting Children (Online Classroom) 

Course length: 3 hours

This Online Classroom will raise your awareness of the tell-tale signs of abuse, and give you the tools and confidence you need to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively should the need ever arise in your coaching career.

The course has been awarded 2 CPD points by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

You will learn the importance of person-centred care and taking an individualised approach to your coaching practice, that puts the child or young person at the heart of every session and be able to: 

  • Identify and recognise good coaching practice and the implications for your coaching
  • Refresh your knowledge around recognising safeguarding issues, what to do, and just as importantly, what not to do
  • Explore your values and feelings in relation to child abuse, and recognise their potential impact on your response
  • Take appropriate action if concerns about a child arise
  • Learn from and pick the brains of our expert tutors, all of whom have lived Safeguarding experience – such as club welfare officers, schoolteachers, or police officers.

This course is tutor led and meets the safeguarding requirements to be a licensed coach who coaches young children. On completion of this course, you should forward a copy of your certificate to British Orienteering at info@britishorienteering.org.uk to be added to your records.

Introductory eLearning for Safeguarding children and young people in sport or physical activity (provided by the NSPCC)

Course length: 3 hours

Do you come into contact with children and young people through sport or physical activity?

Whether you’re a sports coach, an official, a paid member of sports staff or a volunteer, it’s important you understand your role and responsibilities in protecting the children you work with.

NSPCC

As the UK’s experts on safeguarding, the NSPCC’s introductory Child protection in sport and physical activity elearning course (previously known as Child protection in sport training) will help you to gain an understanding of your role in protecting children from abuse or harm and what to do when concerns arise. By the end the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify what is meant by child abuse and safeguarding
  • Recognise, respond, report and record concerns about the safety and welfare of a child or young person
  • Describe the types, signs and indicators of abuse and neglect
  • Apply good safeguarding and child protection practice to your sport or physical activity setting
  • Describe how sport and physical activity settings can put safeguards in place.

Please note that this course is delivered privately by the NSPCC and is not linked to British Orienteering. There is no Orienteering based content on this course.

UK Coaching - Club Welfare Officer (CWO): Time to Listen Course

Course length: 3 hours

The Time to Listen course is an important aspect of the Club Welfare Officer's role and provides the support needed in a variety of situations. The course has been awarded 1.5 CPD points by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

Club Welfare Officer's should have already taken the Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop prior to this.

  • How a welfare officer works with others to create a child-centred environment 
  • How the role of the welfare officer fits into the wider safeguarding environment 
  • How safeguarding fits into the wider culture of your organisation 
  • How to respond to and report concerns 
  • How you can support your coaches to protect themselves.

Ann Craft Trust eLearning modules - four modules supporting safegarding for adults

The Ann Craft Trust provides four eLearning modules to support learning for safeguarding adults. Courses include:
